With confidence high after their 4-0 demolishing of table-topping Chelmsford City the week before, an unchanged Hornchurch side looked to set themselves up for the visit of fellow play-off hopefuls Horsham in mid-week with a win over mid table Carshalton.
It was Carshalton, though, who started the brighter leading to an early chance for Zak Graham who, with oodles of time and space, swept the ball well wide of goal, hardly troubling home keeper Dale Brightly. The first half finished goalless and pretty much even and the home side will have been happy to resume the game after the break with the visitors kicking
into the sun.
It didn't seem to bother Carshalton, though, as they took the lead 6 minutes into the second half through Robert Ursell, who curled a shot in from the corner of the area. Things got worse for Hornchurch 3 minutes later when Lewis Gonsalves powered home a header into the roof of the net from a corner to make it 2-0.
Hornchurch huffed and puffed but failed in the main to make much
impression and Carshalton sat back. However, with just under ten minutes to go and with a seemingly unassailable lead, Graham was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for time-wasting, providing arguably the turning point of the game. Kris Lee stooped to head home at the far post in the 85th minute, Simon Parker blasted home to equalise two minutes later and Lee ran through to score in the final minute to complete a remarkable turnaround.
